Goals of the project
The goals of this research project are :
- the evaluation and the modeling of the anaerobic digestion process of the condensate/ municipal wastewater mixture in a pilot scale (77L) PABR. Evaluation criteria will include the biogas productivity, methane concentration in the biogas and COD removal rate,
- the development and the modeling of a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) as a model for the activated sludge process and optimization of the operational parameters aiming to achieve specific effluent requirements according to environmental standards,
- the investigation of the possibility to produce electricity and simultaneously treat the effluent of the anaerobic digester (PABR) by using Microbial Fuel Cell technology,
- to assess as an alternative scenario of anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge with
household fermentable waste condensate ,
- the development of an integrated Municipal Fermentable Solid Waste and municipal wastewater management system based on the experimental finding, for a medium size city and
- the implementation of life cycle (LCA) modeling approach in order to assess the environmental and economic impact of the proposed Municipal Fermentable Waste and municipal wastewater co-management paradigm
